New South Wales government is failing to protect kangaroos

New South Wales government is failing to protect kangaroos

Recent news coverage shows the significant threats facing kangaroos across the state of New South Wales.

‍

The NSW Department of Planning, Industry and the Environment (DPIE) is under increasing pressure to explain how they are managing kangaroos in a way that is sustainable and protects their welfare. Leaked documents show that DPIE has no accurate figure on the number of kangaroos killed for commercial and non commercial purposes across the state.

‍

A 2019 audit found that the department took no compliance action in relation to miss-shot kangaroos. These kangaroos are being left to die agonising deaths from shooting injuries. The IKPA hopes that this pressure will increase the transparency in the way that the department manages kangaroos to minimise the significant welfare consequences of both commercial and non-commercial kangaroo shooting. We call for a moratorium on all shooting until these management issues are resolved.
