IKPA believes that existing methods to estimate population sizes of kangaroo species across Australia, as implemented by governments, remain flawed, lack independence from managerial and stakeholder concerns, and are inadequate to underpin an evidence-based and precautionary approach for setting harvest quotas.
IKPA scientists are investigating existing and alternative methods for estimating population sizes and harvest quotas. Our goal is to identify flaws and provide alternative and credible approaches to inform transparent and independent governance.
